Povidone Iodine, Metronidazole and Aloe Powder – Vidone-M

Antiseptic for skin disinfection with Povidone Iodine, Metronidazole

Povidone Iodine – Povidone iodine (PVP-I), also known as iodopovidone, is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. It may be used both to disinfect the skin of the patient and the hands of the healthcare providers.

Povidone-iodine is a broad spectrum antiseptic for topical application in the treatment and prevention of wound infection. It may be used in first aid for minor cuts, grazes, burns, abrasions, and blisters. It kills sensitive organisms like bacteria, fungus, protozoa, and spores present on the skin. It is also used to sanitize skin before a surgical procedure is performed. Povidone-iodine exhibits longer-lasting antiseptic effects than a tincture of iodine, due to its slow absorption via soft tissue, making it the choice for longer surgeries. Chlorhexidine provides similar results, but with equal toxicity concerns.

Consequently, PVP-I has found broad application in medicine as a surgical scrub; for pre and post-operative skin cleansing; for the treatment and prevention of infections in wounds, ulcers, cuts and burns; for the treatment of infections in decubitus ulcers and stasis ulcers; in gynecology for vaginitis associated with candidal, trichomonal or mixed infections

Metronidazole – Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. Metronidazole is primarily used to treat: bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease(along with other antibacterials like ceftriaxone), pseudomembranous colitis, aspiration pneumonia, rosacea (topical), fungating wounds (topical), intra-abdominal infections, lung abscess, periodontitis, amoebiasis, oral infections, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and infections caused by susceptible anaerobic organisms such as Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium, Peptostreptococcus, and Prevotella species. It is also often used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori along with other drugs and to prevent infection in people recovering from surgery.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:  Povidone iodine is a broad spectrum microbicide that destroys microbial protein and DNA. It has excellent in vitro antimicrobial activity and is indicated for preoperative preparation of the periocular region (lids, brow, cheek) and irrigating the ocular surface. PI is supplied as Betadine (5% sterile ophthalmic preparation solution, Alcon) and is packaged in a single-use, 1-fluid-ounce bottle.
